Located on the south bank of the River Thames, between Barnes and Kew, Mortlake is a residential area in the London Borough of Richmond. Before becoming part of Greater London, the district was part of Surrey. The area is also the finishing spot of the University Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge. The race starts from Putney and ends at the Chiswick Bridge in Mortlake.
Mortlake Brewery or Stag Brewery situated on the edge of the district is the most popular landmark in Mortlake. The brewery that had existed since 15th century was acquired by James Watney &Co in (later Watney Combe &Reid) in 1889. After the Watney’s Stag Brewery in London, Victoria, was removed in 1950s, the name was applied to the Mortlake Brewery. The brewery was part of Scottish Courage, Heineken and Anheuser-Busch Europe Ltd. The brewery was closed in 2015.
Another site in the districts is 123 Mortlake High Street, also known as the Limes. The Grade II listed building was the seat of the local government for the Municipal Borough of Barnes between 1895 and 1940.
The area has good transport link s with Waterloo to Reading line running through the Mortlake. The nearest railway stations are Mortlake and North Sheen railway stations. In addition, the district is served by two bus routes that run between Hammersmith and Mortlake and between Richmond and Hammersmith.
